LPC NEW COMBINED WORKSHOP – TECHNOLOGY FIT OUT 2021-2023
The new combined workshop project began pre-covid but halted due to economical uncertainty. By mid-2021 Port operations had recovered from the initial covid-induced decline and forecasted a stronger than expected volume over the next 10-20 years. With space a prime constraint, LPC made the decision to relocate critical workshop services to a new location that better served the growing layout.
The existing workshop is a ‘rabbit-warren’ of rooms across multiple buildings. The new combined workshop is a purpose-built 3-level building comprising workshop spaces on the ground floor, lunchroom, toilet/shower/amenities on the 1st floor and offices on the top floor. A 23m high service bay will accommodate four straddle carriers. The Ports Electricians, Supply Store, Fabricators and Mechanics will be based in this new building.
Working closely with design and engineering company Beca, I provided digital requirements, reviewed and approved the buildings communication, security and access control designs. I led the design of primary and secondary fibre supplies in conjunction with other projects I was managing.
After a technology audit of existing equipment and allocations into the new building an order was placed to fulfil the shortfall of technology. Where possible we re-used existing equipment to reduce waste and control costs.
Throughout the 20 month project the key success factor has been strong stakeholder engagement and excellent technical knowledge.
New industrial workstations and dashboards have been procured, configured and await installation. These machines will better service the challenging environment. I’ve completed access control configuration detailing door schedules, multiple automated gates and user access. This project experienced construction delays unfortunately extending its delivery until after I departed LPC and New Zealand. Fellow Millpondian Stefan Buerki is now leading the helm to finish the project with my support remotely as needed.
