CELLULAR RETROFIT – STRADDLES
The overwhelming benefits visible after a recent transition from WiFi to Cellular technology saw Lyttelton Port Company approve the cellular retrofit of 10 existing Liehbherr and Kalmar straddles. New on-board vehicle mounted units (VMU), modems, switches, enclosures and cabling fitted through a staged roll out.
A busy 24/7 operation created an importance of planning the project delivery with minimal Operational interruption.
Working closely with the mechanical team to integrate project work into an already tight maintenance schedule with limited workshop space, we established an approach that could leverage opportunities as they arose. The flexibility of mechanical and digital resources proved influential in the success of the project.
Impact to Operations was reduced to one straddle at a time and on several occasions, we coincided the retrofit work with planned maintenance. Negating the need for additional downtime.
Regular retrospectives with the team created opportunities to refine the process and reduce labour/cost.
The project was completed ahead of schedule and underbudget.
